Cockroaches in dishwashers and appliances: why your kitchen equipment is prime harborage

The motor housing of your dishwasher, refrigerator, and microwave is the most protected warm space in your kitchen — and cockroaches know it.

Why appliances are the top harborage

German cockroaches select harborage based on warmth, moisture, darkness, and physical protection from disturbance. Kitchen appliances satisfy all four conditions simultaneously. Refrigerator compressor motors generate sustained heat 24 hours a day. Dishwashers maintain residual heat and moisture throughout the day-night cycle and provide a protected void under the tub. Over-range microwaves have enclosed motor housings against upper cabinets. Coffee makers and toasters have heating elements and food-residue interiors that are rarely cleaned to the level required to remove all cockroach attractant. The practical implication: in a cockroach infestation that has been present for more than 2–4 weeks, the appliances in the kitchen will have cockroach populations inside them. Treatment that does not address appliance harborages will see residual population even when all other harborages are treated.

The refrigerator

The refrigerator motor housing is the single most reliable cockroach harborage in residential kitchens. The compressor or condenser fan motor — typically accessible via the lower front kickplate panel or at the rear of the appliance — generates sustained heat that cockroaches are strongly attracted to. In a medium to heavy infestation, the motor housing area may contain dozens to hundreds of individuals. The inspection method: remove the lower kickplate panel (usually two plastic clips or screws). Use a flashlight to illuminate the motor housing area and the gap between the refrigerator bottom and the floor. Evidence: droppings, casings, live individuals. Treatment: gel bait placed directly against the motor housing, IGR spot treatment into the enclosed space if accessible. For very heavy infestations, the refrigerator may need to be pulled completely away from the wall to access the back.

The dishwasher

Dishwashers are one of the most underappreciated cockroach harborages. The pump and motor assembly under the dishwasher tub generates heat; the water cycle creates a warm, humid environment; the installation void is dark and undisturbed. Access for inspection and treatment is through the lower kickplate panel at the front of the dishwasher, or by pulling the dishwasher fully out (this requires disconnecting the water supply and drain — not always practical in a rental). The narrow gap between the dishwasher side panels and the adjacent cabinets is a documented cockroach travel route between the dishwasher harborage and the lower cabinet harborage zones. Gel bait placed at the front kickplate area and at the junction between the dishwasher and cabinet panels addresses the populations in this zone.

Microwaves, toasters, and small appliances

Counter-top small appliances that are left in place — particularly toaster ovens, coffee makers, stand mixers, and rice cookers — accumulate food debris inside heating elements and motor housings that are difficult to clean completely. In a kitchen with an active cockroach infestation, these appliances become secondary harborages as cockroaches exploit the food residue and warmth. Toaster and toaster oven interiors should be cleaned completely (empty crumb tray, shake out interior debris) as part of the preparation for professional treatment. Over-range microwaves are a particularly dense harborage because the enclosed motor housing area against the upper cabinet is warm, dark, and rarely cleaned.

Preparing appliances for treatment

  • Remove the lower kickplate panels from refrigerator and dishwasher before the technician arrives — this gives immediate access to the motor housing areas.
  • Pull the stove away from the wall if it is freestanding — access to the back wall behind the stove is important.
  • Clean the interior of the toaster and toaster oven: shake out all crumbs, wipe down interior surfaces. This removes competing food signals that can reduce bait attractiveness.
  • Move small appliances away from their usual positions on the counter to allow inspection and treatment of the wall and countertop areas they normally occupy.
  • Do not use the dishwasher for 12–24 hours after treatment to allow gel bait placements inside the kickplate area to be active.

Frequently asked questions

Are cockroaches in the dishwasher a contamination risk for dishes?+
Yes — cockroach feces, shed casings, and body parts deposited in the dishwasher interior or on dishes are a contamination risk. Cockroach allergens from this source can trigger reactions in sensitised individuals. During an active infestation, running dishes through a full hot-water dishwasher cycle will clean contact contamination, but the harborage population should be addressed by treatment.
Can I put gel bait inside the dishwasher?+
No — gel bait inside the dishwasher interior will be washed away. Bait placements go in the kickplate area and in the junction between the dishwasher side and adjacent cabinets, not inside the wash chamber.
We got a second-hand refrigerator and now have cockroaches — can we be sure it came with the appliance?+
Second-hand appliances are a common cockroach introduction vector. If infestation began shortly after receiving a used appliance, this is the most likely origin. The motor housing inspection is the key diagnostic.
