Click beetles experience 380 g of acceleration when self-righting — 40× the lethal limit for humans.
Eyed Click Beetle
Alaus oculatus
Flips herself off her back with an audible click. 380 g of acceleration. 30 cm of jump.

When flipped on her back, the click beetle launches herself into the air with a spring-loaded mechanism that produces an audible 'click' and 380 g of acceleration. The 2-cm beetle hurls upward by 30+ cm to right herself. The click is so fast and forceful it inspired research into miniature spring-loaded actuators.

5 wild facts on file
A 2-cm click beetle launches herself 25-30 cm into the air to right herself — equivalent to a human jumping over a five-story building.
Click beetle self-righting has inspired research into miniature spring-loaded actuators for autonomous robotics.
The eyed click beetle has two large false-eye markings on the pronotum that startle small predators with the appearance of a much larger animal.
Click beetle larvae ('wireworms') live underground for 2-5 years, eating plant roots — major agricultural pests.
The click beetle's spring mechanism is one of the most-studied biomechanical systems in insects — Cornell, Illinois, and Hungarian Academy researchers have all published on the click physics. The eyed click beetle is sometimes called 'eyed elater' and is a popular subject of children's nature books because of the dramatic audible click on demand.
