Hellgrammites have massive curved SICKLE-LIKE JAWS that extend forward dramatically — powerful enough to seize and crush large aquatic prey, and to deliver a painful bite to humans handling them carelessly.
Hellgrammite

The hellgrammite is the predatory aquatic LARVA of the eastern dobsonfly (Corydalus cornutus — already in Wild Files as adult dobsonfly). Larvae are 6-9 cm long, fearsome aquatic predators with massive sickle-like jaws that can deliver a painful bite to humans handling them. The hellgrammite is one of the most-cited predatory aquatic insects in eastern NA streams and is a flagship species in stream ecology research and FRESHWATER FISHING — fishermen across eastern NA collect hellgrammites under streamside stones to use as live bait for bass, trout, and other gamefish (the species is one of the most-prized live baits in eastern NA freshwater fishing).

MOST-PRIZED LIVE BAIT in NA freshwater fishing — bass (especially smallmouth bass), trout, walleye cannot resist hellgrammites. Featured in essentially every NA freshwater fishing guide.
Voracious AQUATIC PREDATOR — hides under streamside stones during the day and ambushes passing aquatic prey (smaller insect larvae, small fish, tadpoles, crayfish). Apex invertebrate predator in many streams.
Body has prominent lateral filaments along each abdominal segment — the 'TRACHEAL GILLS' provide oxygen exchange in flowing stream water, allowing the larva to extract dissolved oxygen for aquatic respiration.
Hellgrammite is the LARVA of the eastern dobsonfly (Corydalus cornutus) — after 1-3 years aquatic development, the larva crawls onto streamside soil and pupates before emerging as a 15 cm wingspan adult dobsonfly.
The hellgrammite is one of the most-cited predatory aquatic insects in eastern NA stream ecosystems and the most-prized live bait in NA freshwater fishing. The species is featured in essentially every NA freshwater fishing guide and in major works on stream ecology.
