Summer Pest Alert
Peak wasp and hornet season. Peak bed bug travel pressure. German cockroaches spike in commercial kitchens. Wildlife kits emerge. This is when Metro Vancouver's pest population is maximally active and most visible.
Summer is when latent spring problems become August emergencies. Wasp colonies that were 20 cells in May become 3,000-worker nests by August. A single bed bug introduction in June is a detectable infestation by late July. Commercial kitchens that were subclinical in May can tip into visible cockroach infestations within six weeks of World Cup 2026 opening. Response times matter more in summer than any other season.
Species active now
Colony size peaks August through early September. Food-motivated scavenging intensifies as queens stop laying. Ground nests in lawns and beneath decks cause most same-day callouts.
Tourism season plus FIFA World Cup 2026 (June 13 onward) drives peak introduction pressure. Short-term rentals face 3-5× normal turnover with international guest flow.
Warm kitchens + increased prep volume = fastest population growth. HACCP-audit-track operators should be on weekly inspection minimum through the tournament window.
Second-litter kits become mobile in July-August. Sound in attic that doubled in volume: kits are mobile; exclusion timing becomes more delicate.
Football-sized grey paper nests appear in trees or high on eaves by late July. Aggressive defenders of the nest — professional removal strongly recommended over DIY.
What to do this season
- Inspect before and after every trip: five-minute bed bug check on arrival and on return home.
- Don't leave fallen fruit on the ground — wasp and yellowjacket magnet.
- If you spot a wasp nest smaller than a golf ball, book removal within 48 hours while it's still tractable.
- Commercial operators: confirm your HACCP contract covers June and July explicitly — response capacity tightens during the tournament window.

Climate context
Metro Vancouver summers are dry and warm by PNW standards but milder than eastern Canadian cities. Overnight lows above 14°C sustain rapid cockroach reproduction indoors. Drought-stressed gardens concentrate wasp foraging around fruit and sugary drinks. The 2021 heat dome is an anomaly but a reminder that climate-driven activity spikes are increasing.
